Architecture Rare Architecture
The former Bethnal Green Town Hall has been transformed into a hybrid of contemporary and Edwardian design.
Owner Loh Lik Peng took the bold step of choosing the cerebral architectural practice, Rare, to carry out the hotel’s uncompromising design. The rooftop extension uses traditional motifs within a contemporary design. The result is a striking laser-cut aluminum skin, working as an abstract veil on the Edwardian façade, with many rooms and suites are partitioned by polished transparent glass.

Original details keep the grand aesthetic alive, while glass partitions and bespoke furniture add a contemporary edge.
Original details give guests a taste of the building’s former grandeur, the epitome of which is De Montfort Suite with its triple-height ceiling, ornate molded ceilings, Edwardian and Art Deco detailing, and high arched windows. Rare Architecture chose a series of glass partitions for an impressive open-plan space. Art abounds, from sculptural light fixtures to bold paintings and interactive works.
