Fusing the austere Gothic with chic modern design, Kruisherenhotel opens straight into the inner shell of a monastery.

The designers have come up with many innovative solutions for various structural challenges, including a glass elevator connecting the church to the monastery area. The 60-room complex consists of the original monastery as well as a Gothic church, which now houses the reception area and several hotel facilities, including conference rooms, a library, a boutique, a restaurant, and a wine bar.

The interiors pay tribute to contemporary design while honoring age-old construction and detailing.

Resting on basic principles of transparency, space, modernity, and comfort, the interiors are enhanced by exciting contrasts from the stained glass windows to the stunning, authentic wall and ceiling paintings.

Supreme gastronomy is the lofty standard set—and met—at Spencer’s Restaurant & Bar.

Perched on the mezzanine within the gothic chancel, Spencer’s sits at the heart of Maastricht’s culinary scene, serving up classic French dishes with a modern twist. Spencer’s Bar offers lunch, signature cocktails, and fine wines in the cozy lobby, or in the charming inner courtyard when the weather warms up.

History From church to military

Construction began on the Kruisheren cloister in 1440 after the land was donated to the Order of the Holy Cross.

The entire complex was built over several decades, with the current buildings standing today, completed around 1520. The Order of the Holy Cross (also known as the Crutched Friars) resided at the Kruisheren until 1797 when they were forced out in order to turn the buildings into a military barracks and arms storage during the French Revolution.
