Celebrated and award-winning designer and architect trio Claesson Koivisto Rune—who were the first Swedish architects ever to be exhibited in the international section of the Venice Architecture Biennale (2004)—were responsible for the sensitive restoration.

History A taste of the old
Thanks to the lean financial times back then, most of the building material came from ruined castles on the countryside. The buildings, however, were never used for the soldiers as intended, as most of them never made it home from the wars. In 1935, the structures became listed historic buildings; the architect Nicodemus Tessin Jr. is most famous for the design of the Royal Castle.
Sustainability Keeping an eye on our Conscious Hotel Principles
As the hotel is set inside government-protected buildings, most changes were made to be reversible. Many original features were discovered and preserved in the process.
The kitchen has installed KITRO technology to measure and attempt to reduce food waste. The team separates and recycles waste and compost food waste.
Hotel Skeppsholmen uses only renewable electricity.
No plastic bottles are used and guests are encouraged to drink the tap water. Water flow in all basins and showers is limited to reduce water consumption.
The kitchen strives to use local, seasonal products from small producers whenever possible. The hotel sources honey from its own hives and is currently working on an herb and flower garden.
The hotel encourages guests to use local transportation. Electric bikes are on hand for guests to use during their stay.
Management aims to create a workplace where everyone works together as a team, has fun, and feels valued. The hotel sends out a weekly letter with information and nice guest reviews.
Architecture
Some things are just meant to be. Mårten Claesson, Eero Koivisto, and Ola Rune started an architecture and design firm while still in college and two decades down the road, they haven’t looked back.
