Location
Because of the Plaza de la Independencia’s location between the Recoletos and Jeronimos neighborhoods—in the Salamanca and Retiro districts, respectively—the area is an ideal exploration point. Recoletos is home to the National Archaeological Museum; The Church of San Manuel y San Benito—a Neo-Byzantine architectural feat; the Descubrimiento Garden; and an abundance of fine dining and drinking options. The Jeronimos district, meanwhile, is dominated by El Retiro Park; one of Madrid’s largest green spaces, it used to belong to the monarchy and is now dotted with water fountains that offer the chance to take a boat out on one of the small lakes. The Salamanca district is also home to the Golden Mile, which is a concentrated network of high-end shops and boutiques particularly on Calle de José Ortega y Gasset.
