Originally opening its doors in 1962 as Hotel da Baleeria, the property had once been a shining star in the area.
Though its spectacular sea views helped make it a popular spot, it gradually lost its appeal. In short, it had the setting and good bones that made it ripe for rebirth. Enter Rodrigo Machaz. “We tried to keep as many memories alive from the original hotel as possible,” he says of the full renovation he undertook on the property in 2006/2007, “even part of the hotel’s name.”

“It’s not about forcibly invoking minimalism, but about focusing on what is beautiful,” says Rodrigo Machaz.
Not wanting to divert attention from the hotel’s expansive sea views, the designers opted for minimalistic interiors characterized by neutral colors and calming furniture. The stripped-back aesthetic adapts to the natural landscape.
