Design & Culture

Architecture Puddle Inc.

Soil Nagatoyumoto Architecture

Architecture Puddle Inc.

This once-closed ryokan was regenerated—not rebuilt—into an open place, flowing like the Otozure River.

Preserving the building’s spirit, the redesign blends contemporary minimalism with the warmth of traditional Japanese hospitality. Local red clay, stone, and wood root the space in Nagato’s textures. Rather than adding a private bath, the architecture keeps bathing shared at Onto, returning daily life to the town through walking, meeting, talking. The result is an “unfinished building” that breathes with the town and continues to grow with it.

Interior design Staple Inc.

Guestrooms keep the memory of the former ryokan while creating a quiet escape between walks to the river, Onto, and town.

Curtains reminiscent of mosquito nets and leaf-like lighting gently envelop the spaces. Hagi ware, washi paper lamps, and wooden furniture—crafted by local artisans—bring the interiors to life. On the top floor, a mixed sauna shares one heat source, symbolically reconnecting bath, people, and town. The space opens to the community, offering a calm refuge where the senses can unwind.

Activities Connecting to the culture

SOIL Nagatoyumoto offers 14 activities that reveal Yamaguchi’s nature and culture

From SUP and cycling to hands-on experiences with local farmers, foresters, and ceramic artists, the Activity Center's programs encourage learning for adults and children—and for travelers becoming new locals. A guest favorite is visiting Hagi ware kilns, whose ceramics also appear as in-room art and mugs. These encounters foster real connections with local people, support a sustainable regional economy, and help carry the area’s nature and culture forward. From staying to belonging.

Food & Drink — TARU

A wood-fired restaurant, TARU works directly with local growers and fishers.

Menus follow what the neighborhood yields. The cooking is simple and vibrant, letting honest flavors lead. Signature wood-fired pizza uses an original low-sodium dough that pairs with any topping and highlights each season’s harvest. Menus evolve through the year, offering a clear sense of Nagato’s terroir. Some producers also welcome visits, opening a window into the land and the people who sustain it.

Wellness — Onto & Sauna

Move between Onto and the sauna for a genuine wellness rhythm.

Onto is an ashimoto-yushutsusen—spring water rising underfoot—never heated or diluted, offering a pure, “live” onsen experience found in only a few places in Japan. On SOIL Nagatoyumoto’s sixth floor, a river-view sauna and outdoor bathing area invite unhurried recovery after walks or time by the water. All overnight guests enjoy complimentary, unlimited access.
