Architecture Toru Iwasa, Kei Kaihoh, Musashino Art University
and was fashioned from hard Zelkova wood and pine in order to withstand the region’s intensely snowy winters. Cedar wood and tatami grass flooring give guests a glimpse into the region’s architectural heritage, while the progressive renovation by Toru Iwasa and Kei Kaihoh won the Singapore Good Design Award in 2015, among other awards.

In the reception, wooden beams surround an artwork by sculptor Ryuichi Ohira, which was crafted from a huge camphor tree trunk and features Daikokuten, a fabled god of prosperity. Traditional Japanese floor cushions and modern pieces that evoke the 1960s complement furniture by the likes of Arne Jacobsen, Isamu Noguchi, and Charles & Ray Eames. Dark cedar floors are juxtaposed with cream-colored walls.

Rejuvenation Open-air immersion
Embraced by a cedar forest with stunning views of Japan’s famous Mt. Makihata, the hotel’s open-air bath looks out onto a primal world, one wholly unspoiled by artificial objects. With no roof to box you in, the experience here is one colored by the sky, shaped by the clouds, and illuminated at night by moonlight and the Milky Way.
Food & Drink The power of ingredients
The hotel’s Sanae Feng-Sanaburi restaurant produces tastes that cannot be found in Tokyo, but rather those unique to the Niigata and Uonuma region. The chef behind the exquisite cuisine here trained in Kyoto’s celebrated Yoshiizumi restaurant, which has won three stars in “Michelin Guide Kansai”, and is also a student of Ayurveda in Sri Lanka.
Underrated Destinations Coexist with the environment
When the snows fall at Satoyama Jujo, one is immersed in a silent and beautiful world, with an abundance of outdoor activities close by. The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale is just a two-minute drive away, while the hotel’s close connections to local farmers, sake and wine breweries, and ryokans and restaurants in this region mean that guests are fully immersed into the fabric of the land.

As we assess all that we’ve taken for granted this year, we found that travel is high on that list. We are dreaming about traveling through Japan but find that it’s also become important to ask how and why. Inspired by the unique Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, we decided to peer into this captivating land through this special lens.
