In quaint Kurashiki, amid canals lined with weeping willow trees, Yoruya echoes the traditional Japanese townhouse-style of the Edo period, with exposed wooden beams, tatami flooring, and sliding paper doors (shoji) that allow you to leisurely step back in time.

Renovation of the 110-year-old structure preserves much of its original features.

The building originally served as a kimono merchant’s shopfront and residence, and later as a ryokan beloved by locals. The renovation celebrates this history, with newly constructed wings acting as a counterpoint to the diverse architectural styles found throughout the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter. Much like the district itself, Yoruya features brick and plaster walls, with exposed heritage wooden beams and pillars breathing new life into this cultural property. The hotel's layout incorporates a small alley—known locally in the Kurashiki dialect as a “hiyasai”—that connects its various elements in a delicate harmony between past and present.

Interior design Simplicity Co., Ltd.

Carefully chosen materials echo the feel of the historical quarter.

Wooden beams, tatami flooring, and sliding paper doors (shoji) allow guests to experience a more traditional and tranquil Japan. Spaces are furnished with newly crafted furniture and contemporary fixtures that harmonize seamlessly with the original architectural elements. Reddish-brown hues complement the warm tones of the exposed brickwork in the stylish maisonette rooms in the new annex building, while light hinoki wood enhances the brightness of the white plaster walls in another. A collection of artwork throughout features curated pieces that reflect the soft, organic textures of plant-based materials, such as dyed and woven fabrics, igusa products, and washi paper.
