Architecture For the sake of the sea
At Iki Retreat by Onko Chishin, the architect has played to the strength of the setting, designing floor-to-ceiling windows that make guests feel as if they are hovering between a world of inside comfort and outside beauty. Architecturally, the property embraces minimalism, presenting natural wood tones, low furnishings, and traditional Japanese elements that blend with subtle Western touches to create a calming, cocooning atmosphere. Each room also commands a stunning and fully unobstructed sea view.
Interior design East meets West
Warm and soft, low and inviting, the design elements—from plank beds and enveloping chairs to Japanese-style dining tables and sliding screen window shades, along with natural-wood wainscoting artfully applied—invite you to nestle into a womb-like environment on the sea. Indeed, the sea is the star here, with baths, beds, chairs, and tables inviting you to gaze at the wonder of the Genkai Sea.

Destinations
As we assess all that we’ve taken for granted this year, we found that travel is high on that list. We are dreaming about traveling through Japan but find that it’s also become important to ask how and why. Inspired by the unique Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, we decided to peer into this captivating land through this special lens.
