Architecture Grüntuch Ernst Architekten
Working in dialogue with the space’s former use as a prison, Grüntuch Ernst Architects have masterfully breathed new life into a structure long known to Berliners only by its decorative Augsburg Baroque facade facing Kantstrasse. Now exuberant secret gardens, a private roof deck, inspiring art, and more are bathed in light thanks to a spectacular five-story high atrium that’s been opened up and topped with a glass ceiling.
Interior design Grüntuch Ernst Architekten
From isolation to interaction: To create an inviting social environment and a sense of flow, the designers have enlarged windows, opened spaces, and added plant installations and warm fabrics. Throughout the hotel, original brick, glass, and steel harken back to the structure’s original purpose—including historical bars in the upper part of the windows.
Food & Drink Free flowing
Chef Sophia Rudolph reinterprets traditional dishes and brings to life a hidden, verdant space at the center of the hotel. The inviting square-shaped restaurant has a high ceiling and is enclosed by red brick walls. Huge windows offer views to the garden, while interflowing courtyards create a sense of liberty and ease.
Art & Culture History and artistry
When guests are not being exposed to creatives in the Berlin scene at Amtsalon, they can take in contemporary and historical photographs throughout the hotel’s public areas—provocative works assembled in exclusive cooperation with the Kicken Berlin gallery.
Food & Drink All-day café
Set in a sleek, light-filled space with a leafy summer garden, Lotta allows you to linger with a friend over breakfast or enjoy a quick lunch while shopping in Charlottenburg.
Food & Drink Neighborhood bakery
The bakery uses regional old grains, natural sourdough, and a lot of time to craft delicious, hearty sourdough bread. On top of loaves, the bakery offers croissants, brioches, and other sweet pastries.
Architecture
The team behind some of Berlin’s most ambitious adaptations sets out to transform a 120-year-old prison into a unique 44-room boutique hotel—Wilmina, our newest member in the city.
