When asked what method he applied in the creation of Le Collatéral, Philippe Schiepan replied, “No method. Just feeling.”
Indeed, through its use of metal and cement, its soap and oil for the walls, its spacious volumes that also manage to create intimacy, the sixth-century structure is more like a sculpture and conversation piece than a hotel that has been classically refurbished.

The rooms are filled with furniture designed in a modern-craft style as well as massive oak and Japanese-style tubs.
Inspired by Arles and the UNESCO-heritage landscapes of the Camargue, the hotel is bathed in ochre, gray, blue, and gold—the colors of the salt, reeds, water, and sand that define this magical area of France.
