Location
Sofia’s City Center is an exciting hub of creativity, history, and culture. Architecturally, the city boasts a varied skyline, including the neo-Byzantine St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, which features the Crypt Icon Museum underneath the building; the neoclassical Ivan Vazov National Theatre, which faces the City Garden; The National Gallery; and the Soviet relics of Bulgaria’s communist past. Art galleries of all sorts abound, while the pedestrian-friendly Vitosha Boulevard, with views of Vitosha Mountain at one end and the Cathedral Church Sveta Nedelya, offers a shopping experience unique to the Bulgarian capital, including plenty of street-side cafés and restaurants. Sofia’s City Center is also dotted with green spaces, one highlight being the Doctors’ Gardens, again, with open air cafés and restaurants lending a bustling atmosphere that captures Bulgarian city life. Sofia also has a lively nightlife scene, and thanks to its location at the foot of the Vitosha Mountain, offers skiing opportunities in the winter.
