Rote Wand Gourmet Hotel Architecture

Architecture Untertrifaller Architects

Crafted in harmony with the village, the hotel is comprised of five “houses” and an old schoolhouse that, together, enhance the character of this timeless setting.

Rote Wand has been designed to take existing historical structures and fully update them so as to provide the highest quality amenities while maintaining the tradition, character, and architectural integrity of the region. This old-meets-new approach is perfectly represented by Rote Wand Chef’s Table, which is located in the old schoolhouse.

Interior design Untertrifaller Architects

To preserve the timeless feel of the village, the hotel has outfitted each guestroom with pieces made by local craftspeople.

Here, one discovers a world of hand-hewn sycamore, ash, and spruce that ages naturally to alter the look and feel of the hotel over time. A prevailing color scheme of white and gray is subtly augmented by dashes of red, Halotech lights, and local textiles.

Mountain Austria's finest

Mountain Austria's finest

On the banks of the River Lech in the westernmost state of Austria, Lech Zürs is the biggest ski resort in Austria (and one of the five biggest in the world), with excellent on- and off-piste activities.

In winter, one discovers world-class downhill and cross country skiing, as well as great hiking. While in summer, one can indulge in yoga, biking, fishing, hiking, canyoning, rafting, and golf. The neighbouring villages of Zürs, St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben, Warth, and Schröcken are well-linked to Lech am Arlberg by ski lifts and pistes.

Food & Drink Old school meets contemporary

Julian Stieger brings a new vision to the cuisine at Rote Wand, gleaned from his years of experience at top restaurants in New York, Vienna, and Copenhagen.

Rote Wand Gourmet Hotel is literally an all-day feast for the senses. The hotel’s à la carte restaurant, The Rote Wand Stuben, boasts an unforgettable fresh breakfast directly at the table, topnotch Alpine cuisine, and a legendary fondue; the Lobbyrestaurant serves a five-course gourmet menu; the lounge and bar offer exquisite snacks and sublime cocktails; and Rote Wand Chef’s Table, set in a schoolhouse from the 1780s, presents Chef Julian Stieger’s exquisite reimagining of long-term sustainable mountain cuisine that reorientates the palate to the forests and gardens of the Alps. While traditional in spirit, the settings for each are largely contemporary in design, with a cozy and always-friendly atmosphere.

Sustainability Keeping an eye on our Conscious Hotel Principles

“The Rote Wand Gourmet Hotel was established in 1989 with a clear vision: to create a hotel that seamlessly blends into the local landscape and respects the character of the village, rather than dominating it.”

Josef Martin Walch

Architecture

Architecture

The hotel is made predominantly from wood and was designed to blend naturally into the surroundings. The team worked with regional architects and craftsmen.

Waste

Waste

Rote Wand avoids plastics as much as possible and coordinates with local providers to purchase goods in reusable containers. Waste is sorted, with organic waste going to create compost or biogas.

Energy

Energy

The hotel provided land to build a biomass heating plant in 2007. By using wood from the region instead of fossil fuels, the hotel saves 140,000 liters of heating oil annually, significantly reducing CO2 emissions.

Products

Products & Produce

Around 85% of all ingredients used in the hotel are sourced from the region. This close cooperation with local producers ensures the quality of the products, supports the regional economy, and reduces the footprint through short delivery routes.

Culture

Culture

The hotel has long been a part of the community. The hotel brings locals in, like hosting the Lech Trachtenkapelle, a traditional brass band, for live performances at the Rote Wand.

Recreation

Recreation

Hiking, yoga, and other mindful programs are on offer. In the cooking class, guests can go to the fish pond to catch fish, pick vegetables and herbs in the garden, and use these ingredients to cook a local dish.

Accessability

Accessibility

The hotel’s underground garage offers 98 charging stations for electric cars, a unique feature in the region. There is a local bus system, and bikes can be rented at the hotel.
