Hotel Skeppsholmen is housed in two centuries-old Royal Marine barracks on a green island in the center of Stockholm. When the buildings were constructed more than three centuries ago, the builders used materials recycled from ruined castles throughout Sweden. Today, these structures are landmarks: When they were transformed into a hotel in 2009, great care was taken to work with a light touch. Most changes were made to be reversible so that the buildings can be returned to their original state if necessary. During construction, original brick floors were discovered and floorboards were restored and reused. The 77-room hotel plans to keep pushing its sustainability program forward, earning Nordic Swan Ecolabel level four for its efforts thus far. Hotel Skeppsholmen benefits from Stockholm’s ambitious environmental policies, taking advantage of the city’s renewable energy, clean tap water, and composting program. The kitchen has recently installed KITRO, a hardware that measures and analyzes kitchen waste so the hotel can reduce excess. The team is currently building an herb and flower garden where it hopes to put its compost to good use.
