Architecture
The Originals
Hotel Pacai has breathed new life into a 15th-century mansion in the heart of Vilnius, Lithuania. The building has lived many lives—and seen many reconstructions, extensions, and refurbishments along the way. When local architect Saulius Mikštas took on this latest renovation, Mikštas went for a detailed, historically minded architectural plan that maintains and highlights the original baroque. “This is not ‘disposable architecture’ like all the commercial buildings and shopping malls that are being built now,” Mikštas tells us. Hotel Pacai collaborates with the local community through a range of partnerships and initiatives, including purchasing ingredients from local purveyors and working with Vilnius’ Lewben Art Foundation to highlight rotating artwork created by local artists.
We spoke with the team at Hotel Pacai to learn the latest on the hotel’s conscious journey.
We aim to use less plastic, create less waste, save water and other resources, support the local community and local artists, and have diversity in our team.
We organize cultural events and partnerships with the local community, such as presenting newly published books by local writers in our guestrooms. We also have a local approach to our products and produce. For example, we serve cheese made by cheesemakers in a nearby village in our restaurant and offer local birch juice and other local products in our bars and minibars.
Reducing waste, particularly food and energy waste, is a challenge. We buy shampoo and toiletries in bulk, implement motion-activated lights in common areas, use LED lights, and work with a company that collects food waste and recycles it into fertilizers.
